Blepharoplasty Q & A

What is an upper blepharoplasty?

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty addresses drooping of the lid caused by excess upper eyelid skin. As you get older, your skin loses its natural elasticity and strength. The delicate skin around your eyes is more susceptible to these changes.

When this loss of elasticity is combined with gravity, the skin on the upper eyelid droops, wrinkles, and may hang over the eye thus accelerating the appearance of aging, and creating a tired look.

What is a lower blepharoplasty?

Lower lid blepharoplasty addresses the lower eyelid bags, associated eyelid hollows, and excess skin that may cause fine lines/wrinkles along the lower eyelids.

In some cases excess fat is removed, in most cases, your fat can be repositioned to restore a more youthful contour to the lower eyelid, and this may be done in conjunction with the removal of a small amount of excess skin.

The decision of which procedure is right for you will depend on your goals, as well as your clinical exam and specific facial anatomy.

Am I a candidate for blepharoplasty?

What happens during blepharoplasty?

Dr. Gupta takes a personalized approach to care and customizes your blepharoplasty procedure based on your concerns and goals.

Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure that in some cases can be done under local anesthesia Dr. Gupta injects a numbing medication around the eye so you feel no pain during the procedure.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is performed via an incision in the upper eyelid crease. For lower lid procedures, fat bags can be addressed through hidden incisions on the inside of the eyelid. In some cases, excess skin is removed via an incision below the lashline, which usually fades over time.

Based on your eyelid laxity, Dr. Gupta may also recommend eyelid tightening to minimize the risk of lower eyelid retraction.

After performing surgery on both eyes, Dr. Gupta sends you to the recovery area and then discharges you. You need to arrange to have someone drive you home after your blepharoplasty.

How long is recovery following blepharoplasty?

Dr. Gupta provides specific instructions regarding care and activities following your blepharoplasty to ensure a quick and safe recovery.

You can expect bruising and swelling but you may be able to resume most of your usual activities within 10-14 days. It takes time for the swelling to subside completely, and you may not see the final results of your blepharoplasty for a few months.
